The estate

Location

A dreamy vineyard, right next to the city of Heraklion. The Scalarea Estate lies in Skalani, a few kilometres off the center of Heraklion city and just 4 km from the archaeological site of Knossos and is the jewel of the viticultural PDO region of Archanes.

Vineyards

The expansion of the Boutaris company’s activity in Crete and its involvement with the Cretan vineyard began in 1990 with the planting of the privately owned Boutaris vineyard in Skalani, on the Fantaxometochos estate. The Fantaxometochos estate, or “ghost estate”, owes its name to the efforts of its former owner to save it from pirate raids, spreading the word that the estate was inhabited by ghosts.

The Scalarea Estate with this vineyard has the foundations for the further promotion of Cretan wine worldwide through the production of high quality wines. In an area famous for its ecosystem and its tradition in viticulture, the estate with this vineyard has managed to highlight the potential of local varieties to date. The Winery has now passed to new ownership with the aim of spreading the Cretan vineyard within and outside the borders through a winery – destination, a jewel for Greek wine tourism.

The estate covers an area of 6,6 hectares and stretches on the north side of a low hill, a location protecting the vines from the warm southern winds of the Libyan Sea, while allowing the cool, beneficial sea breezes “meltemia” of the Cretan sea.

Varieties

The Research and Development department carries out organized research with successful results on the potential of Greek grape varieties, as well as on the ability of foreign varieties to adapt to the Greek climate and to blend with native varieties. The grapes grown in the vineyard are used for the production of two white wines, Scalarea & ο Νοῦς, the multi-award winning red Scalarea, the Scalarea rosé and the two dessert/sweet wines, Iouliatiko and Moschato Spinas.

In 2015, an ambitious re-viticulture is being implemented with the aim of creating a vineyard with very high quality potential, which will highlight the potential of the Cretan soil. The estate is a gifted vineyard, with great natural balance and all the aspects that compose the right terroir.

The varietal composition of the vineyard includes local varieties such as Vidiano, Malvasia Aromatica, Assyrtiko, Kotsifali and Muscat Spinas, as well as foreign varieties such as Chardonnay and Syrah.

In the past, the vineyard functioned as an “experimental vineyard.” Varieties such as Mavrotragano, Assyrtiko, and Aidani were first cultivated in a small section of the vineyard in order to observe their acclimatization to the area and to be consistently tested for the final product.

The Winery

The company’s major investment in the area was completed in 2004 with the creation of a state-of-the-art winery with impressive hospitality spaces.

At the winery’s facilities, the rich cellar, the special viewing room for a unique journey into the history of Crete, and the impressive tasting room await you, where you have the opportunity to taste selected local wines and discover the secrets of the Mediterranean diet.

The winery, due to its impressive design, is the ideal space to host events of any capacity, social or professional, which will surely impress guests since it is located within the vineyard, in a landscape of unique natural beauty.
